An Expert Tells How to Remove Snow Efficiently

Paul Lyle knows a thing or two about clearing snow. As superintendent of buildings for the Cambridge Department of Public Works, he oversees a crew that is responsible for keeping the walkways clear around about a dozen municipal buildings, including City Hall and the police station.

He relies on three shovels. For light, flaky snow, he has one with a wide, shallow metal scoop that he uses to push snow or slush out of the way. He picks up medium-weight snow with a plastic shovel that has a narrower, deeper scoop. For heavy snow — the type the plow might deposit at the end of your driveway — he has a shovel with a deep plastic scoop that can hold even more. Read more…
